Do It Yourself Projects
I’m not sure what happened. Something has changed in me. Over the last several weeks I have watched way too much TV… the HGTV channel to be specific. I am particularly fond of the renovation shows such as Fixer Upper, Home Town, and Property Brothers. Fixer Upper is my favorite. I’m pretty sure Chip and I have some weird connection. Regardless, I’m pretty sure my family has started to resent these shows. Not me. I find them fascinating and I love to see the transformation.
There has been, however, a side effect to watching these shows – they give me ideas. Over the last month I have undertaken a number of DIY (do it yourself) projects. To date I have finished fencing my yard with wood fencing, built and installed a sliding barn door, and just completed a wood accent wall. There are truly two benefits to DIY: its cheaper and there is a sense of pride in the accomplishment. Of course, the finished projects serve a functional purpose too.
I know that I’m not alone with the DIY projects. Just take a look around Pinterest and you will know what I’m talking about. I think its great, but also a word of caution: the life of a disciple is not a DIY project. To begin with, we can only grow in grace because God has given us grace. Our life as disciples is a response to God’s work in us and the saving grace found in Jesus Christ. With that said, we must also never forget that there is always a communal aspect to our faith life. The people of God have always been called together. We bring our many gifts together to be the one body. We learn, teach, and encourage one another. And we worship. I think you get the idea.
I don’t know if you have ever undertaken a DIY project around your house. Maybe its something you’ve been thinking about. Just make sure that faith is not one of those projects.
